Infertility cases should be viewed as a whole and not separately, and investigations should be done for both partners (the cause of infertility can only be one or both).

What is infertility?

Sterility, or infertility, is a disease that affects the reproductive tract and impedes one of the basic functions of the human body: procreation. There will be considered several criteria for following a normal task:

  • Production of spermatozoa in men and ovules in women;
  • Mobility of sperm;
  • Fertilization capacity of sperm;
  • Proper nesting of the fertilized egg in the uterine cavity;
  • Normal egg development (embryogenesis).

For a successful pregnancy, the embryo must have a harmonious development in a suitable hormonal environment. Any imbalance between these factors can lead to infertility.

Uterine obstruction, polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis. Repeated pregnancy losses are mostly caused by congenital disorders (with genetic predisposition) that involve malformations in the uterus structure or the appearance of uterine fibroids.

Infertility detection and treatment

Infertility detection

Couples are advised to consult a gynecologist if, within a year, pregnancy does not occur, without using contraceptive methods, under normal sexual activity. The doctor will perform the physical examination of both partners and determine their health status and possible repercussions on infertility. Both partners are questioned about their sexual lives considering the issues that can lead to infertility.

If the information so far cannot reveal the cause of infertility, other additional specific tests will be performed. In women, variations in the temperature of ovulation will be monitored compared to the basal body temperature, and radiographs of the uterus and uterine tubes will be performed.

In men, the sperm examination will be done first.

Infertility treatment

In recent years, infertility treatment and timely diagnosis have made significant progress, with gynecological surgery and hormone treatment resolving most infertility problems. If these methods do not work, you can use Assisted Reproduction Technology, which for many couples has been very successful.

The evaluation and treatment of infertility are quite expensive and involve time, resources and energy, as well as the participation of the couple, the doctor and the entire medical team.

How long will a couple go to the doctor?

Women up to the age of 35 are advised to seek medical advice after a 12-month period in which they have failed in their attempt to become pregnant.

If they have a history of gynecological problems, such as irregularities of the menstrual cycle or an old infection of the fallopian tubes, they should consider the medical clinical examination sooner.

Likewise, women over 35 years of age, it is important to start the evaluation after only 6 months when they tried to get pregnant. After 40 years, fertility tests should be started immediately.

The couple must have had sexual contact 3-4 times during the week of ovulation, because the egg survives only 24 hours and counting this aspect increases the chances of success.

The results of infertility treatments

The answers to infertility treatments are different for each couple. These vary depending on: the constitutional predisposition of the man and the woman, the success rate of the treatment and, sometimes, and luck. However, the age of the woman, the uterine malformations or if both partners have fertility problems that sometimes make the favorable results difficult to consider.

Who are you addressing?

Most gynecologists usually have the expertise needed to treat and guide patients, others also recommend consulting a doctor who specializes in fertility issues.
